Industrial Hemp Farming

“The farmer would require about 30 pounds of seeds to plant a one-acre field. With the proper fertility, a grower could realize a yield, after cleaning, of approximately 1,000 pounds harvested from that one acre.  More common yields after cleaning is about 800 to 900 pounds. Irrigated land can yield up to 1300 to 1500 pounds from one acre. If this 1,000 pounds were pressed into oil, this will work out to approximately 200 pounds of oil and 800 pounds of seed cake.  That seed cake can be milled down to a 50% hemp protein and fiber food supplement to be used in smoothies, baking or other food items. Depending on the variety of hemp and the height of the crop, the remaining stalk from the field will be approximately 1 to 1.5 tons.  The stalk can be decorticated into industrial fiber, and the hemp hurd can be used for building material such as hempcrete.

The contract price for the crop can vary, but a grower can expect the 1,000 pounds of seed to return about $700 if it is food grade.  Non food-grade hemp would be about $250 for 1,000 pounds.

One ton of hemp stalks can return approximately $90 to the grower.”
